That Sugar Film

WOW!
Just
WOW!

I had almost decided not to bother going to see That Sugar Film because
I figured I don't do sugar so what was the point.
I don't do prepackaged 'health' food.
I don't do low fat.
I don't do juice.

But, I do learning.

So I bought a ticket and went along with my friend Christina from The Joy of the Home

This is an amazing film.  Truly, I love how it was presented, the information, the humour and that it wasn't bogged down in stats, but still managed to get the important facts out there.

I would love to see this in every school.
I would love to see every doctor going to view it

I am taking my kids next week.

If you are lucky enough to live in Launceston the cinema here will be viewing this for around two weeks.

PLEASE
PLEASE
PLEASE

Do yourself a favour and go see this

if you think you don't eat sugar because
you don't add it to your cuppa or your cereal
or you don't eat cake or pastry

or if you are just curious as to how you can
damage your liver
gain 10kg
gain 10cm on your waist
in just 60days eating 'healthy' food

then go see this.

If you breath
go see this!!
Take your kids, your parents, your friends
and go see this.

Do you know what you are eating?

My kids are avid label readers.
I have taught them to do this because I want them to make informed choices about their food and to know what they are eating.

In doing so we come across some unbelievable stuff.

It really amazes me the lengths companies will go to increase their revenue by decreasing quality.  Stuff 'food' full of fillers, thickeners and other crap to make the produce go further.  Get more packets out of one item.

I tend to steer clear of prepackaged foods as a rule.  I do buy yoghurt occasionally and my kids get a pack of rice crackers sometimes when we are are out but generally I have cut back to very little from the supermarket shelves.

This item caught my eye the other day.

On the front it said Sliced Chicken Breast.

Now, like me I suspect you would expect that to be a chicken breast that had been thinly sliced.
I have to admit even I was surprised when I turned the packet over and found an extensive ingredients list.

I mean, seriously!
WHY???

The saddest thing about this is that the majority of people DON'T turn they packet over and check the ingredients.
They rely on the manufacturer having their best interests at heart.  This is so far from the truth.  They don't give a shit about your health.
Some of them talk the talk but at the end of the day they are there to make money.

They plaster the front of their packets with whatever will sell,

LOW FAT
GLUTEN FREE
NATURAL FLAVOURS
HIGH FIBRE
ADDED VITAMINS

None of this means the actual product is healthy.
You see it in the cereal aisle and one of my pet hates is the rows of muesli bars and similar that are targeted at children's lunch boxes.  Have you seen how much sugar are in all of those things!

The latest celebrity to get on the 'no sugar' bandwagon is Jamie Oliver.  He has recently called for a sugar tax, stating that sugar is evil.   Yet, when you have a look on the ingredients of ALL his woolworths, ready made meals they contain substantial amounts of sugar.

Again, people will choose his products because he is a loved and trusted celebrity who obviously cares about what people eat!

DON'T TRUST!!
Read labels!

Whether you are LCHF, paleo, primal, vegan, vegetarian you need to know what you are putting into your body!

Christmas Ginger Cakes

I think ginger and christmas go together almost as well as Pru and Trude don't you!
As soon as christmas comes around I start thinking gingerbread men, houses and cakes.
Since this is our first christmas doing the LCHF thang I had to give some serious thought to what my baking would be.
As it is I have cut back seriously on what I am doing as having a newborn in the house has impacted on available time somewhat LOL

As much as I love gingerbread I didn't want to go down the whole wheat/sugar road so I got to thinking about alternatives and decided to play around with my bean cake recipe and see what I could come up with.

The ingredients aren't all that different which is great as I think you could tweak this recipe to suit whatever your taste buds fancy.

Ingredients

400gr tin of white beans
4 eggs
120gr butter (melted)
3tbs agave/honey/maple syrup (treacle would give a more traditional flavour)
2tbs coconut flour
1/2tsp bi-carb
1/2tsp baking powder
1.5tbs dried ginger
1tbs cinnamon
1/2tsp salt

Method

Turn oven onto 200c to heat.
Drain and wash your beans well.
Blend beans with one egg until smooth.  Add remaining eggs and all other ingredients.
Blend until well combined.
Now, you can bake this in a ring tin for around 30min but as I am putting some of these into a christmas  hamper for my aunt I thought it best to make them as cupcakes.
If you do this they only took 20min to bake and come up a beautiful golden brown.
I intend on adding a cashew cream icing just before I deliver them.
